Chapter 7 - An Empty Place at the Table

The house was too warm, almost stifling. Margaret's Christmas tree glittered beside the entrance, and the fireplace threw orange light across the carpet. Vanessa stood by the mantel. When she saw me holding the box, she lowered her eyes.

"Look at you," Margaret said to Sophie, spreading her arms. "My beautiful granddaughter."

Sophie accepted a stiff hug. Margaret barely looked at me.

Dinner was served at a long dining table covered with polished silver and red candles. Daniel sat across from Sophie, trying to smile. His chair was close enough that he could have reached for her hand. He didn't.

"Dad," she said softly, "did you see my school play?"

"I watched the video."

"You said you'd come."

"Work was busy."

Margaret interrupted. "A father has obligations, dear. Your mother doesn't understand that."

I put down my fork. "Sophie asked Daniel a question. He can answer it."

"Don't start," Margaret said.

Daniel stared at his plate. "I'm sorry I missed it, Soph."

Sophie nodded, but her eyes shone.

A little later Margaret announced she had prepared something special. She produced a folder with an embossed gold seal and placed it beside my plate.

"A holiday truce," she said. "A sensible arrangement. You keep living in the little house, and Sophie stays with us every other week while Daniel gets himself settled."

I opened the folder. The terms went further. It asked me to waive claims to the business, acknowledge unspecified financial misconduct, and approve Margaret as temporary decision-maker for Sophie whenever Daniel was unavailable.

"This isn't a truce," I said. "It's a confession you wrote for me."

"Read the benefits before you complain."

"Did you read the part where you become my daughter's guardian?"

Daniel's fork clattered.

"Mother," he said, "you said we'd discuss visits."

"And we will, once Claire signs."

Sophie pulled at my sleeve. "Mom, why does Grandma need to keep me?"

I closed the folder. "She doesn't."

Margaret's face hardened. "Then you leave me no choice."

She lifted her phone and pressed a number already waiting on the screen.
