Chapter 17 - The Story We Refused to Sell

We reported the post and contacted the school. Administrators adjusted pickup procedures, and Nina requested removal of the identifying information. Within hours, the original upload disappeared, though copies lingered.

"Did Grandma do it?" Sophie asked when she overheard my call.

"We don't know," I said. "And we won't guess."

I learned how exhausting restraint could be. Every day offered another reason to accuse someone. Every day I had to separate what I knew from what I feared.

Vanessa called to apologize for the leak, though she had no proof who posted it. "I could've stopped Mom sooner," she said.

"Yes," I replied. "You could have."

She was quiet.

"But you did eventually," I added. "Now keep doing the right thing when nobody rewards you for it."

At the shop, we set up independent oversight of payments, with Nina and an outside accountant reviewing the questionable transactions. I could not take control merely because I had been wronged; the ownership dispute remained open. Instead I worked with the managers and creditors to keep orders moving while the court sorted out authority.

Angie brought in a cake after our first successful delivery of the year. It had crooked lettering: WE MADE IT TO FRIDAY.

Everyone laughed harder than the joke deserved.

That evening Sophie asked whether we could take down the Christmas decorations. "I don't want that night in the house anymore."

We boxed up the garlands and packed away the ornaments. She held onto the silver star.

"Can we keep this one?" she asked.

I hesitated. It had carried proof of a betrayal. But she'd always known it as the first ornament on our tree.

"Of course."

"Next year it can just be a star," she said.

Two weeks later, Nina called with an update: the handwriting specialist's preliminary findings supported forgery, and investigators had traced the diverted payments.

Then she paused.

"There's an offer from Margaret's lawyer," she said. "It would protect the house quickly, but it has one condition."

May you like

"What condition?"

"You have to agree not to testify about the Christmas Eve recording."
