Chapter 11 - My Husband’s Signature

I held the phone out to Daniel.

He watched the video once.

Then he sat down like his legs had failed.

“You signed it.”

He looked at me. “I can explain.”

“Every liar says that right before the lie gets longer.”

“I thought it was a draft.”

“You signed it in front of your mother.”

“She told me it would never be filed unless something happened to you.”

“What was supposed to happen to me?”

“I didn’t know.”

I walked away before I did something I would regret.

Ellie was coloring at the small hotel table with headphones on. Thank God.

Ramirez asked Daniel to explain from the beginning.

Daniel said Margaret had spent years warning him that I would eventually leave him and take Ellie. She convinced him to sign “protective documents” so the family would not lose contact with the child.

“You believed her?” I asked.

“I was scared.”

“You were weak.”

“I know.”

“No, Daniel. Weak is forgetting an anniversary. Weak is avoiding a hard conversation. You signed paperwork designed to take my daughter away from me.”

He started crying.

I felt nothing.

That scared me too.

Ramirez took a copy of the video. “The fact that he signed it doesn’t mean he knew about the alleged plan to manufacture danger. But it matters.”

“It matters to me,” I said.

Daniel nodded. “It should.”

An hour later, a second detective arrived with news.

Vanessa had been found.

She was at a private urgent-care clinic thirty miles away, claiming I had attacked her without provocation.

“She filed a complaint?” I asked.

“Yes.”

I almost smiled. “Good.”

Daniel looked confused.

“Why is that good?”

“Because now she has to explain why I hit her.”

Ramirez’s phone rang.

He answered, listened, then looked at me.

“What?” I asked.

“They searched Vanessa’s car.”

“And?”

“They found a bottle of liquid sedative.”

My skin went cold.

May you like

Ramirez continued.

“And a handwritten schedule with Ellie’s name on it.”
