Chapter 7 - The Woman With the Seal

Vanessa had spent years smiling across holiday tables while quietly building a paper version of my life in which I barely existed.
School forms.
Medical forms.
Emergency pickups.
Guardian permissions.
All signed with my name.
The police moved quickly once forgery entered the picture. Vanessa stopped answering calls. Margaret hired an attorney before dinner.
Daniel came to my mother’s house that evening with a box of files.
“I took these from Mom’s office,” he said.
I didn’t invite him inside.
“What’s in the box?”
“Copies of the trust petition.”
“And?”
“Notes about you.”
My stomach twisted.
He handed me a yellow legal pad.
Dates ran down the left side.
Claire late to pickup.
Claire raised voice at dinner.
Claire had wine with medication.
Claire left Ellie with babysitter.
Claire cried in driveway.
Normal moments from six years of motherhood had been turned into evidence.
“Who wrote this?”
“Mom.”
I flipped another page.
At the bottom was a typed memo.
Objective: establish pattern before minor reaches age six.
My knees weakened.
“This is a plan.”
Daniel nodded.
“You knew?”
“Not this much.”
“Stop saying that.”
“I’m telling you the truth.”
“The truth after you get caught is not honesty.”
He closed his eyes.
Then I noticed an envelope taped inside the box lid.
It had my name on it.
Inside was a copy of a private investigator’s report.
The first page contained photographs of me at work, at the grocery store, outside Ellie’s school, even sitting in my car crying after a fight with Daniel.
Someone had followed me for four months.
The final page listed a recommendation.
Create incident involving child safety to accelerate emergency guardianship request.
My throat closed.
“What incident?” I whispered.
Daniel shook his head.
Then his phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen and went completely still.
“What?” I asked.
He turned the phone toward me.
A text from Margaret.

Under it was a photo taken seconds earlier.
A photo of me standing on my mother’s porch.
