Chapter 12 - The Hearing Before Sunrise

Olivia didn't wait for regular office hours. She asked the family court for an emergency hearing, attaching the blue-room photographs, the preserved security clip, the school's warning, and the threatening messages.

The hearing took place the following morning. Isabel wore the only dark blazer she owned. Ethan sat at the other end of the bench because their lawyers wanted the court to see that neither parent was pretending the past year had been simple.

Sloane arrived with an attorney and a face full of practiced concern.

"Isabel violated an order," he argued. "She entered a private residence using a false name and distressed a vulnerable child."

Maya stood. "We are not hiding that conduct. My client accepts responsibility for entering the home. The issue is whether the existing restrictions still protect this child in light of the new evidence."

The judge watched the thirty-second recording in silence.

Then she studied the door photographs.

"Who installed the exterior lock?" she asked.

Sloane's attorney hesitated. "We haven't established that."

"I suggest you establish it."

The judge did not declare anyone guilty. She was careful about what she could decide on an emergency record. But she granted Isabel temporary, professionally supervised contact with Caleb, ordered an expedited custody review, and directed that no child-care arrangement involving Sloane be made without further approval.

Isabel put both hands over her mouth.

One hour every afternoon. Not enough. More than she'd had in thirteen months.

Outside, Ethan approached her.

"He'll be there tomorrow," he said. "I'll bring his seal."

"He sleeps with that thing?"

"Every night."

Olivia hurried down the courthouse steps with a fresh filing.

"Sloane's attorney just submitted a notarized document claiming she has independent medical guardianship over Caleb."

Ethan frowned. "She doesn't."

"The document says she does," Olivia replied. "And the signature beside yours belongs to a court-appointed witness."

Isabel looked across the parking lot, but Sloane was already gone.
