Chapter 7 - The Price of Coming Home

Ethan ordered Felix to freeze every pending trust transaction and call the bank's fraud department. The transfer hadn't cleared. Yet.

"Caleb is the beneficiary," Ethan said. "Why would anyone move that money?"

"There are education and medical-expense provisions," Felix answered. "Somebody submitted invoices from a treatment facility."

"What facility?"

"Haven Ridge Behavioral Center."

Sloane's fingers tightened around her handbag.

Before Ethan could question her, Officer Raines approached Isabel. "I need you to come to the station. There is an outstanding civil order, and we can't pretend it isn't there."

Caleb heard the word station and began to panic.

"You said she could stay!" he cried at Ethan.

"I said I'd help her," Ethan answered.

"You said that last time too!"

Isabel crouched beside him. "Look at me. This is not your job to fix. Adults made this mess, and adults have to clean it up."

"Are you going back to jail?"

"I don't know," she answered, unwilling to give him another broken promise. "But I have a lawyer now, and I will keep fighting to see you."

She gave him three gentle taps on the wrist.

Ethan watched his son make himself brave for her sake. He had never felt smaller.

Isabel left with Raines to address the order. It was not an arrest for kidnapping, as Sloane loudly suggested. Ethan corrected her in front of the officers.

"If you say that again, I'm calling Olivia."

After the car disappeared through the gate, Caleb refused to leave the front window.

Felix sent Ethan copies of the trust invoices. Each claimed Caleb had received overnight treatment at Haven Ridge during the past six months.

Ethan scrolled past a forged insurance code and a doctor's signature.

Then he saw the dates.

On three of those nights, Caleb had been locked in the blue room.
