Chapter 6 - A Name on the Wrong Page

"I signed a permission form," Ethan said. "Not a confession."

Attorney Olivia Chen asked him to photograph every page, including the notary stamp. He spread the affidavit across the kitchen island, remembering Sloane arriving at the hospital after his father's stroke with a folder of urgent documents.

"She said the foundation's insurers needed my signature."

"Did you read it?" Olivia asked.

Ethan stared at the floor. "No."

Isabel looked away. His carelessness had cost her thirteen months with Caleb.

Olivia compared the stamped date with Ethan's calendar. "You were in Seattle for the port inspection. The notary claims you appeared in San Diego that afternoon."

Sloane said, "Obviously somebody made a filing mistake."

"A mistake that helped put an innocent woman in jail?" Isabel asked.

"Innocent according to whom?"

"According to the prosecutor who dropped every charge."

Olivia told them not to touch the original paperwork. She wanted a forensic examiner and a sworn statement from the notary.

The police asked Sloane to remain available for questions. She crossed her arms. "I have nothing to hide."

Then Ethan's phone rang. His longtime assistant, Felix Rowe, was calling from the office.

"Mr. Whitlock, I need to tell you something before you see it on the news. Someone's requested an emergency transfer from Caleb's education trust."

"How much?"

"Four million dollars."

Ethan's throat went dry. "Who authorized it?"

A pause.

"The authorization is signed in your name."

Sloane looked at the phone, and Isabel understood the panic in her eyes. The blue room was only one part of what had been happening in this house.
