Chapter 12 - My Mother's Price

I gripped the phone so hard my hand hurt.

"Put him on camera."

"He is seventeen days old, Adrian. He has very little to say."

"Video call. Now."

A pause.

Then my screen changed.

My mother appeared in a dim room, holding Noah against her shoulder.

He was small.

Too small.

Dark hair covered his head. His face was red from crying.

Grace made a sound beside me that I will hear until I die.

Not a sob.

Something deeper.

Something pulled out of a mother who could see her baby and could not touch him.

"Noah," she whispered.

His eyes opened for a second.

Vittoria looked into the camera.

"Healthy. Fed. Safe."

"Give him back," Grace said.

My mother smiled.

"You should have signed the papers."

Grace moved closer to the phone.

"You locked me in a basement because I wouldn't hand you my child. What exactly did you think was going to happen when Adrian came home?"

"I thought my son would remember who he was."

I spoke slowly.

"Tell me what you want."

"At dawn, you will resign your position before the council. Dante will take operational control. You will sign over your voting interests in Rossi Holdings to a trust I manage for Noah."

"And Grace?"

My mother's face cooled.

"Grace leaves. Permanently."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning I don't care where she goes as long as she never comes near this family again."

Grace's jaw tightened.

"You mean as long as I never testify."

For the first time, Vittoria's eyes flickered.

Grace saw it.

So did I.

"That's what this is really about," Grace said. "Not Adrian. Not Noah. The ledgers."

The call ended.

Marco looked at us.

"We can hit the estate tonight."

"Too many people loyal to her," I said. "And we don't know where Noah is inside."

Grace wiped smoke from her face.

"Then we give her what she wants."

I stared at her.

"No."

"Not for real."

"She'll search us."

"Good. Let her."

Grace reached into her coat and pulled out something smaller than a coin.

A memory card.

"What's that?"

"The reason she kept me alive."

I looked at it.

Grace said, "I photographed the original ledger pages before they caught me. I hid the card inside the lining of my bra. They found my phone. They never found this."

Marco let out a low whistle.

"What's on it?"

Grace met my eyes.

"Proof your mother paid to have your father killed."

Then she added, "And proof Dante helped her."
