Chapter 6 - Beneath the Estate

The tunnel smelled of wet stone, dust, and old secrets.

Marco led with a flashlight. Elias limped behind us. I kept one hand on the wall and the other on my pistol.

"How long has she been using this?" I asked.

Elias answered, "Longer than you've been running the family."

That was not what I wanted to hear.

The passage split beneath the old wine cellar.

One path led toward the carriage house. The other sloped deeper under the property.

On the ground between them lay a gold chain.

I knew the pendant before I picked it up.

A tiny Saint Christopher medal.

I had given it to Grace on our first anniversary because she hated flying and pretended she didn't.

There was blood on the clasp.

"She came this way," I said.

Elias pointed deeper.

"That tunnel ends at the old river chamber."

We followed.

Twenty yards later, we found a wheelchair tipped on its side.

Then a torn blanket.

Then a small digital recorder.

I pressed play.

Grace's voice crackled through the speaker.

Weak. Breathless.

But unmistakably hers.

"Adrian, if Elias gets this to you, listen before you do anything stupid."

Despite everything, I almost smiled. That was Grace.

"Your mother wants you angry. Angry people are easy to steer. She kept asking me to sign papers giving her temporary guardianship of Noah. I refused. She said a Rossi child belongs to the family before he belongs to his parents."

My hand tightened around the recorder.

"I found something before she locked me up. Your father's death wasn't an accident. The ledgers prove someone paid the mechanic who cut the brake line on his car. The authorization code was V.R.-01."

Vittoria Rossi.

My mother.

Marco whispered, "Jesus."

The recording continued.

"I don't know if she ordered it, but she knows what happened. That's why she can't let me leave. Adrian, if I don't make it—"

The audio cut out.

I hit play again.

Nothing.

A noise came from farther down the tunnel.

A scrape.

Then a woman's voice.

"Adrian?"

My heart slammed against my ribs.

"Grace!"

I ran.

The tunnel opened into a stone chamber beside the river foundation.

A figure stood behind a reinforced glass partition.

Thin. Pale. Wearing a gray hospital gown.

Grace.

Her hand pressed against the glass.

Mine met it from the other side.

Her lips trembled.

"You came."

Then she looked over my shoulder and screamed.

May you like

"DOWN!"

The tunnel behind us exploded.
