Chapter 1 - The Slap in Studio B

The slap cracked across Studio B so hard the music seemed to stop on its own.

Twelve-year-old Lily Carter stumbled sideways, one hand flying to her cheek. Her ballet slipper slid on the polished floor, and she nearly went down.

Brooke Sanders laughed.

“Maybe now you’ll remember where the back row is.”

Nobody moved.

Not the eight girls lined along the mirror. Not the two mothers watching through the glass. Not even Ms. Vale, the instructor, who stood beside the speaker with her arms folded like she had somehow missed the whole thing.

But Emma Reed had seen everything.

She had come to Brightwood Dance Academy to pick up her younger cousin after class. She was twenty-seven, tired from a double shift at the diner, and still wearing black work pants and a gray hoodie. She had not danced seriously in almost nine years.

Still, the second Brooke lifted her hand again, Emma moved.

She crossed the floor fast and caught Brooke’s wrist before it came down.

“Enough.”

Brooke stared at her. “Let go of me.”

Emma did.

Then she stepped between Brooke and Lily.

Lily’s eyes were wet. Her shoulders were pulled tight, like she was trying to disappear inside her own body.

Ms. Vale finally spoke. “Excuse me. Parents and guests are not allowed on the floor.”

Emma looked at her. “She just hit a kid.”

“It was a disagreement between students.”

“That wasn’t a disagreement.”

Brooke rolled her eyes. “She ruined my turn.”

Lily whispered, “I said I was sorry.”

Emma turned toward her. “You don’t apologize for being hit.”

The room went dead quiet.

Then a sharp voice came from the doorway.

“What exactly is going on?”

A tall blonde woman in a cream coat walked in carrying a designer bag. Emma recognized her from the giant photograph in the lobby: Vivian Sanders, chair of the Brightwood parent board and mother of Brooke Sanders.

Brooke’s face changed instantly.

“Mom, she grabbed me.”

Vivian’s eyes went to Emma.

“You put your hands on my daughter?”

“I stopped your daughter from hitting Lily again.”

Vivian looked at Lily as if she were something stuck to the bottom of a shoe.

“This girl again?”

Lily flinched.

Emma heard it. Two words. This girl.

Not surprise. Not concern.

History.

Vivian walked closer. “You need to leave.”

Emma didn’t move.

Then Lily reached out and caught the edge of Emma’s sleeve.

Her fingers were shaking.

“Please,” she whispered. “Don’t leave me alone with them.”

Emma looked down at her.

And in that second, she knew this was bigger than one slap.

Behind them, Ms. Vale quietly locked the studio door.
