Chapter 15 - The Lie That Stole Nine Years

Emma did not cry right away.
That surprised her.
She had imagined the truth for nine years.
In every version, finding proof would feel like freedom.
Instead it felt like somebody had reached backward through time and punched a hole through her chest.
Her mother watched the video beside her.
“Oh, Emma.”
“That’s why they knew me.”
Diane touched her shoulder.
Emma pulled away, not because she was angry at her mother, but because she couldn’t bear comfort yet.
“Do you know what I lost?” she asked.
Diane’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“No. I had a scholarship interview. I had regionals. I had coaches calling me. Then one lie and suddenly I was the thief.”
David sat across from them.
“The video is strong evidence.”
“For what? Ruining my life?”
“For more than that if it connects to a pattern.”
Emma laughed bitterly. “A pattern.”
Lily stood in the doorway.
She had heard enough.
“This happened to you too?”
Emma looked at her.
“Yeah.”
“Did you quit because of them?”
Emma wanted to say no.
Wanted to say she had made her own choices.
But lies had done enough damage in this story.
“Yes.”
Lily walked over and sat beside her.
“Then don’t quit again.”
Emma stared at the twelve-year-old girl.
There was no speech after that.
No dramatic hug.
Just a kid telling an adult the thing she needed to hear.
The next morning, David contacted law enforcement with the archive evidence and Peter’s files.
Margaret Grant called Emma before lunch.
“I want to talk.”
“Through my lawyer.”
“No. I need to tell you something before Vivian finds out.”
Emma almost hung up.
Then Margaret said, “The original scholarship judges are coming back tonight.”
“Why?”
“Because one of them saw Lily’s interrupted audition and asked questions.”
Emma sat straighter.
Margaret continued, “Vivian is planning to destroy the archive before they arrive.”
“The police sealed that room.”
“She has another copy of the records.”
“Where?”
A long pause.
“In her house.”
Emma waited.
Then Margaret whispered, “And Brooke just found out what her mother has been doing.”
A scream sounded on Margaret’s end of the call.

Then Brooke shouted in the background:
“You used me!”
