Chapter 10 - My Father's Voice

We listened in Captain Hale's office at 1:18 in the morning.

Just five of us.

Me. Evan. Hale. A federal investigator on speaker. And Richard Whitmore, because I wanted to see his face when the truth arrived.

The recording began with static.

Then my father's voice filled the room.

Older than I remembered.

Tired.

But steady.

"Richard, I'm giving you one chance. Reverse the guarantees and return the collateral assignments."

A second voice answered.

Richard.

"You signed them."

"I signed blank lender authorizations. Margaret told me you substituted schedules after execution."

Richard's face went gray.

On the recording, he said, "Be careful what you accuse me of."

My father replied, "I'm accusing you of fraud."

No one moved.

Then came a woman's voice.

Margaret Whitmore.

"Daniel is right. I have copies."

Evan covered his mouth.

His mother's voice had been gone from his life for twenty years.

The recording continued.

Richard sounded panicked now.

"Margaret, don't do this."

"You already did it."

Then a fourth voice entered.

Soft. Male. Controlled.

"This meeting is over."

My father said, "Who the hell are you?"

The unknown man replied, "The person who made sure your lenders stopped taking your calls."

The tape ended.

The digital card contained documents. Bank transfers. Legal drafts. Emails. Enough to prove a conspiracy had existed.

But the unknown man was identified only by initials.

R.S.

I looked at Richard.

"Who is R.S.?"

He closed his eyes.

Evan whispered, "Dad?"

Richard's voice cracked.

"Robert Sterling."

The name was instantly familiar.

Sterling Capital.

One of the largest private credit firms in the country.

And the lead investor in the merger I was scheduled to sign tomorrow.

Richard looked at me.

"Ava, if Sterling learns you have this, he won't come after the company."

May you like

He swallowed.

"He'll come after you."
