Chapter 18 - Richard's Last Secret

Richard was awake when I reached the hospital.

Barely.

Evan stood beside the bed. Celeste sat near the window, eyes swollen from crying.

Richard looked smaller beneath white sheets.

Power did that when it finally left a person.

"Ava," he whispered.

I moved closer.

"You wanted to talk."

He nodded.

"Your father didn't lose everything."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"Before the lenders took control, Daniel moved one asset out of Cross Marine. Quietly. Legally. Sterling never found it."

"What asset?"

Richard looked at Evan.

"The North Harbor land."

Evan inhaled sharply.

North Harbor was now one of the most valuable undeveloped deep-water port sites on the West Coast.

Worth billions.

"Who owns it?" I asked.

Richard pointed weakly toward me.

"You do."

I stared at him.

He explained that my father had transferred the land into a trust for me when I was nineteen. The trustee was Margaret Whitmore.

When she became ill, she transferred trusteeship to Captain Hale.

That was what the brass key opened.

A private safe-deposit box held the original trust documents.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"Because Sterling was searching for it. Margaret believed you'd be safer if you didn't know until you had enough power to defend it."

My anger cracked around something deeper.

My father had not left me only evidence of what was taken.

He had left me something they failed to steal.

Richard began coughing.

I waited.

Then he said the part he had saved for last.

"I signed one of the lender documents. The first one. I told myself it was temporary. I told myself Daniel would recover."

"You helped start it."

"Yes."

"And when Sterling went further?"

"I was already trapped."

I looked at Evan and Celeste.

They needed me to forgive him.

I could not.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

But I could choose what happened next.

"Tell investigators everything," I said. "No deals through your lawyers. No family version. Everything."

Richard nodded.

As I turned to leave, he called my name.

"Ava."

I looked back.

"Sterling knows about North Harbor now."

My phone buzzed.
