Chapter 17 - The Confession

My father's signature looked perfect.

That was the problem.

He never signed his full name that cleanly when he was angry.

I knew because I had a childhood full of permission slips, birthday cards, and rushed notes taped to the refrigerator.

Daniel Cross wrote fast. His D leaned left. His final s always curled down.

On the confession, every letter stood straight.

"It's forged," I said.

Robert's lawyers called it authentic.

The judge scheduled an emergency hearing for that afternoon.

We had four hours.

Evan and I returned to the black case.

Three photographs remained inside.

We had ignored them because the recorder seemed more important.

That was a mistake.

The first showed my father outside a bank.

The second showed Margaret Whitmore holding a folder.

The third showed a close-up of a notary stamp.

I stared at it.

"Why photograph a notary stamp?"

Evan zoomed in.

Name: Lorraine Phelps.

Date: June 14.

The confession was also dated June 14.

Captain Hale searched old crew manifests and found Lorraine Phelps listed as a guest on VALOR that day.

"She was a legal assistant for Sterling Capital," Evan said.

"Alive?"

"Seventy-one. Lives in Arizona."

Dana Ruiz found her before noon.

Lorraine agreed to a video call.

She took one look at the confession and started crying.

"I knew this day would come."

She admitted Sterling had ordered her to notarize Daniel Cross's signature after his death.

"I never saw him sign it," she said. "The document was blank when I stamped it."

I felt the room tilt.

"After his death?"

"Three days after."

The confession was not just forged.

It was impossible.

We sent her sworn statement to the court.

At 3:12 p.m., the judge denied Sterling's injunction.

At 3:17, Sterling Capital's shares began falling.

At 3:21, Robert Jr. was taken from the marina building for formal questioning.

And at 3:26, my phone rang.

It was the hospital.

Richard Whitmore had collapsed on VALOR.

Before losing consciousness, he asked for me.

And he said he had one final thing to confess.
