Chapter 17 - The Original Deeds

The copies from Box 314 were strong evidence, but Arthur’s lawyers attacked them immediately.

Photocopies could be altered. Signatures could be disputed. Records could be incomplete.

The original cooperative deeds were still missing.

Brent refused to say where they were.

For two days, Rosa barely slept.

Then Mateo found something in his father’s old toolbox.

A dried red rose taped beneath the metal tray.

Under it was a folded grocery receipt from 2019.

Rosa unfolded it.

Miguel had written four words on the back:

WHERE FLOWERS NEVER DIE.

Naomi frowned. “A cemetery?”

Rosa shook her head slowly.

“Evelyn hated cemeteries.”

Celeste stared at the words.

“Where flowers never die.”

Then her eyes widened.

“The conservatory.”

Evelyn Whitmore had donated a glass greenhouse to the city botanical garden twenty years earlier. It held preserved seed archives and rare roses year-round.

They met a detective there with a warrant.

In the oldest section of the greenhouse stood a bronze plaque honoring Evelyn.

Rosa touched the edge.

It shifted.

Behind it was a narrow wall cavity.

Inside sat a weatherproof tube.

The original deeds were rolled inside.

So was a handwritten letter from Miguel.

Rosa read it aloud.

“Evelyn and I agreed these papers should stay hidden until one of us could safely bring them forward. If you are reading this, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner. I thought silence would protect you. Maybe I was wrong.”

Rosa stopped as tears blurred the page.

Mateo put an arm around her.

The deed signatures were original. The cooperative ownership was clear.

Arthur’s legal foundation cracked in a single afternoon.

But the last page contained something no one expected.

A notarized agreement signed by Evelyn Whitmore.

It transferred her personal twenty-percent interest in the Mercer block to the vendors’ cooperative upon her death.

Celeste stared at it.

“My mother owned part of Mercer?”

Rosa nodded.

“And she gave it away.”

Naomi did the math.

“With the original cooperative share plus Evelyn’s transfer, the vendors control sixty percent of the block.”

Celeste smiled for the first time in days.

Then the detective’s phone rang.

He listened, expression changing.

Arthur Whitmore had disappeared.
