Chapter 7 - Box 314

Marcus opened the loading-dock door from the other side two minutes later.
“I heard yelling,” he said.
Arthur looked furious.
Celeste looked at Marcus. “Did my father tell you to lock us in?”
“No.”
Arthur cut in. “Enough. This ridiculous performance ends now.”
Rosa held up the brass key. “At the bank.”
Arthur stepped toward her. “That key is family property.”
“It was hidden in my flowers.”
“It belonged to my wife.”
“And she gave it to my husband.”
Celeste moved between them. “Dad, stop.”
For the first time, she was not standing beside him.
They went to First Federal the next morning.
Rosa expected Celeste to disappear overnight. Instead, Celeste arrived alone in a navy coat, no sunglasses, no jewelry except her wedding ring.
“I called the bank,” she said. “The box is still active. My mother listed me as a secondary signer.”
Naomi raised an eyebrow. “And your father?”
“Not listed.”
Inside the vault, an employee slid out a long metal box.
Celeste inserted the brass key with trembling fingers.
The lid opened.
Inside were three folders, a flash drive, a sealed letter, and a small cassette recorder.
Rosa saw Miguel’s handwriting on one folder.
She touched it like it might burn her.
Celeste picked up the sealed letter.
Across the front, in Evelyn’s handwriting, were the words:
FOR CELESTE—WHEN YOU’RE READY TO KNOW WHO YOUR FATHER REALLY IS.
Celeste sat down hard in the vault chair.
Naomi said nothing.
Rosa opened Miguel’s folder.
Inside were copies of deeds showing that the Mercer Market vendors’ cooperative had owned forty percent of the block since 1978.
Attached to them were transfer documents signed in 2006.
Rosa stared at the signature.
“That’s not Miguel’s.”
Naomi leaned closer. “It says he sold the property rights to Whitmore Development for ten thousand dollars.”
“He never sold anything.”
Celeste plugged the flash drive into a secure bank computer.
One video file appeared.
Dated three nights before Evelyn’s death.
Celeste clicked play.
Her mother appeared on screen, pale and frightened.
“If you’re watching this,” Evelyn said, “Arthur found out I was helping Miguel.”
Then a man’s voice shouted off camera.
May you like
Evelyn turned toward the door and whispered one final sentence.
“He knows about the forged signatures.”
