Chapter 19 - The Girl at the Window

Six months later, the courtroom was full before nine in the morning.

Damon Pike had pleaded guilty to multiple charges in exchange for a reduced sentence and testimony. Margaret Vale faced charges tied to the deliberate fire, the falsified inspections, and Ellie's kidnapping. Ethan had admitted his part in starting the blaze and covering it up. None of them could buy their way out of the facts now.

Claire sat with Nina on one side and Lena on the other. She had left her wedding ring at home. Not out of anger anymore. She simply didn't want a symbol to tell a lie for her.

The defense lawyers had spent weeks arguing over files, dates, devices, and whether Ruth Alvarez's last recordings could be trusted. The state brought bank transfers, contractor logs, certified copies, witnesses, and the emergency response records from Vale Tower. A missing accountant's careful work had become impossible to ignore.

When Ethan testified, he didn't ask for mercy.

"I lit the fire," he said. "I believed the building was empty because I wanted to believe it. After I learned people died, I helped hide what happened. My mother pressured me. That doesn't excuse me."

He glanced at Claire. She looked back without nodding.

During a break, Torres approached with a young woman in a denim jacket. She had curly black hair and held a small envelope in both hands.

"Claire," Torres said, "this is Maya Finch. She was eight when Riverbend burned."

Maya swallowed. "I was in the laundry room. I couldn't find the stairs. Your brother heard me yelling."

Claire felt the room tilt.

"Tommy?"

Maya nodded. "He broke the window with a chair. He pushed me out onto a fire escape. I tried to make him come, but he heard another little kid upstairs."

Claire covered her mouth. She had spent nine years wondering whether Tommy had been frightened, whether anyone had held his hand.

"He was scared," Maya said gently. "I could see it. But he stayed anyway."

She opened the envelope and took out a photograph. Two children stood outside Riverbend, laughing beside a blue bicycle. Tommy grinned at the camera. Maya was missing one front tooth.

"He asked me to give you something," she said. "He said you would understand."

Then she turned the photograph over.
