Chapter 4 - The Pickup

Six hours earlier, Ellie had been planning her mother's outfit.

"The gold one," she'd said, sitting cross-legged on Claire's bed. "It makes you look like movie-star brave."

"Movie-star brave?"

"Like you could fight a dragon."

Claire kissed the top of her daughter's head. "Then gold it is."

At four-thirty, the school called. Ellie had been picked up by an authorized family driver. Claire hadn't authorized anyone.

She dialed Ethan. He said his mother had sent a car to bring Ellie to the gala early. Claire had argued. He promised everything was fine.

Then a photo arrived: Ellie in a dark room, a strip of silver tape across her mouth. The message demanded a memory card Claire had sewn into the hem of her dress.

The card held copies of Vale Development's old safety records, records an accountant named Ruth Alvarez had risked her life to steal. Ruth had died in a car crash four days earlier. Police called it an accident. Claire had seen the cut brake line in a photograph Ruth's friend sent her.

At Riverbend, the emergency exits had been chained before the fire. The official investigation blamed bad wiring and panicked tenants. The records Claire held showed orders, payments, and signatures. One signature belonged to Margaret Vale.

Another belonged to Ethan.

Claire had told herself the second signature was forged. She'd needed to believe it. Ethan was the man who warmed Ellie's socks in the dryer on winter mornings. He was the man who sat through every anniversary of Tommy's death without asking Claire to stop crying.

In the utility room, that memory made her angrier than the golf club had.

"You let me tell you about him," she said. "For eight years."

"I was scared," Ethan said.

"Of your mother?"

"Of what the truth would do to us."

Claire laughed once, without humor. "Look at us now."

She took out her phone and called Nina Patel, the investigative reporter who had arranged to publish Ruth's files if anything happened to Claire.

"Nina, I need you to get the police to North Pier. Ellie—"

"Claire?" Nina's voice cracked. "Don't go there."

May you like

"Why?"

"I just got Ruth's final recording. She says the fire wasn't the first one."
