Chapter 15 - The Girl in B-Twelve

"No rushing blind," Ortiz ordered as Rourke started forward. "I have a rescue team coming along the lower corridor."
Mara wanted to scream. Instead she watched the water level indicator rise. Someone had overridden the normal warning system. If the lower chamber flooded, rescuers would have only moments to get clear.
Finch found a maintenance phone mounted beneath the overlook. Its direct line reached B-Twelve. She connected a handset and passed it to Mara.
"Lily?"
"Mom! The door won't open. The man with the silver pin left. He said this would make you listen."
"I am listening. Tell me what you see."
"A yellow wheel. A red lever. And a big window facing the dam."
Mara recognized the panel layout from Thomas's map. "Don't touch the red lever. Stay away from the lower stairs. Help is coming."
"I'm scared."
"I know. You can be scared and still do the next right thing. Look at the door. Is there a manual latch?"
"Under a glass cover."
Ortiz's rescue leader confirmed that the latch was safe to use only after pressure equalized. He gave Lily simple instructions through the phone, and Mara repeated them in the steady voice she used when Lily had scraped her knees as a child.
Outside, Bell continued his speech. "We honor those who gave everything so the rest of us could sleep in peace."
Rourke's face twisted. "He doesn't get to say my brother's name."
Ortiz touched his arm. "Make him answer for it. Don't give him an excuse."
At 5:37, the lower rescue door opened. Two technicians reached Lily and guided her through a dry service passage. Mara ran only when the leader confirmed the route was clear.
Lily came around the corner wrapped in a blue emergency blanket. She stopped ten feet away, looking at the stranger with gray in her hair.
"Mom?"
"I'm here," Mara said.
Lily crossed the distance. They held on so tightly neither could speak.
Then Lily whispered against her shoulder, "He didn't just lock me in there. He made me sign something."

She pressed a folded document into Mara's hand. Across the top were the words: CONSENT TO TRANSFER — RIDGEWAY ARCHIVE.
The signature line already carried Mara's name.
