Chapter 9 - What Ranger Carried

Torres knelt in front of Ranger and touched the dog's ears. "I know this animal," he said. "Whatever they call him in a file, he's my partner."

Mara crouched beside him. "Then let's find out what they hid without hurting him."

The tactical harness had a concealed double lining. Beneath one seam was the familiar red-light device; beneath another was a thin data card sealed in flexible plastic. Ranger watched their hands, patient and trusting.

Finch checked the card against a battery-powered reader disconnected from the base network. A list of IDs appeared, along with two future commands marked PENDING.

The first would open the reservoir service gate at the dedication. The second would falsely broadcast that a military working dog had detected an imminent attack. Emergency responders would be redirected, guests trapped, and the general would appear to save everyone.

"He manufactures a threat," Cole said, "then gets applause for stopping it?"

"And while the cameras are pointed at him," Mara replied, "a sealed vault under the reservoir gets emptied."

Rourke studied the schedule. "What's in that vault?"

"Original Ridgeway records, payroll transfers, and evidence of who authorized the convoy's reroute. Thomas said the archive had an automatic release if moved without two valid keys."

"So Bell needs you and the dog."

Mara shook her head. "He needs the device. It proves the old field system can still authenticate his orders."

Dawn coughed painfully. Finch wrapped a clean scarf around her shoulders. "We need a medic."

"There's an off-base urgent-care clinic two miles east," Rourke said. "I know the owner."

Cole volunteered to escort her. Mara almost refused, then saw the tremor in Dawn's hands. She couldn't leave the woman to pay for helping them.

At the service hatch, Dawn caught Mara's wrist. "There was a second visitor to the kennel last night. A girl. Brown hair, green jacket. She was crying. She asked if the dog remembered her mother."

Mara's breath caught. "Lily?"

Dawn nodded. "Before they took her away, she put something in his collar."

Torres turned Ranger's collar inside out. A narrow strip of blue paper fell into the dirt.

In careful handwriting, Lily had written: MOM, DON'T TRUST THE MAN WITH THOMAS'S RING.

Rourke slowly looked down at the gold ring on his own hand.
