Chapter 15 - The Senator’s Promise

Richard Hale had built his political career on promises to veterans. Every campaign ad showed him shaking hands at hospitals and lifting hard hats at construction sites. As foundation board chair, he had publicly praised Arthur Whitmore for restoring dignity to those who served.
Evelyn remembered him from childhood holidays, a booming man who brought expensive candy and never learned the names of the household staff.
Investigators now had to untangle what he knew, when he knew it, and whether he had directly threatened Mara. Political stature didn't make him guilty, but it made every step more visible and every error more costly.
Noah accompanied Eddie Vasquez to a public meeting of the foundation's remaining board. They weren't there to threaten anyone. Eddie wanted to speak for the people named in the brochures.
“I have slept outside the apartments your donations supposedly built,” Eddie said, setting his photograph on the table. “You used my face to raise money. I want to know where that money went.”
For once, the board members didn't applaud. One woman looked at the floor. Another asked for an independent audit, to be published for the residents.
Hale stood. “These accusations are being weaponized against honorable people.”
Noah remained in his chair. “Then open the books.”
“Sergeant, you don't understand how organizations this size operate.”
“I understand a locked door when someone tells me it's my home.”
The clip spread online within hours. Donations were frozen, records secured, and veterans' advocates demanded an emergency plan to keep existing residents housed. Evelyn was relieved to see organizations outside the Whitmore network stepping in. The people who needed shelter could not wait for a courtroom verdict.
That night, a witness called Dana to report Mara had been held in a private property owned through Hale's real-estate partnership. Law enforcement obtained authority to search it.
Evelyn waited with Caleb and Ben at a safe location. Caleb paced until Ben finally said, “Dad, you're making the floor nervous.”
Caleb sat. He held his son's hand for the first time without asking.
At 2:14 a.m., Dana called.
“We found Mara,” she said.

Evelyn shut her eyes.
Then Dana added, “She's alive. But she says Hannah's death wasn't an accident—and she can prove it.”
