Chapter 9 - Two Cars and One Choice

Dana pulled Ben behind the reception desk while Evelyn told Rosa to lead the other children through the rear exit. The second SUV accelerated, hit a trash can, and swerved across the curb. A masked passenger climbed out, trying to reach the front door.

“Down!” Evelyn shouted.

The first driver slammed his SUV between the stranger and the entrance. Metal shrieked. Both vehicles stopped, engines hissing. The masked man ran. Dana called for units and stayed with the children rather than chase him.

The man in gray stumbled out of his car with blood on his temple. He looked at Evelyn, then at Ben.

“Don't let them take him.”

Evelyn stood at arm's length. “Tell me who you are.”

His eyes filled. “You used to call me Compass Boy.”

There were a hundred childhood memories that could have been guessed. That one could not. She had invented the nickname after Caleb got lost in a campground despite carrying the compass backwards all day.

“Caleb?”

He nodded. Evelyn crossed the distance and caught him before his knees buckled. For sixteen years she had rehearsed what she would say if the impossible happened. Now all she could manage was “You idiot,” through a sob. “You absolute idiot.”

He laughed once, painfully. “Fair.”

Sirens approached. Caleb told Dana he would speak through a lawyer and cooperate as a witness, but he would not be taken to the family estate or any location the Whitmores controlled. Dana agreed and arranged medical care with separate protection for Ben.

At the hospital, Caleb explained only the beginning: years ago he had discovered false claims in the foundation's construction budgets. He confronted Arthur. Someone attacked him at the river; a stranger died in the confrontation; Arthur used the confusion to declare Caleb dead. Caleb had lived under another name, terrified that the people who wanted him gone would find Mara and their son.

“Was Dad behind it?” Evelyn asked.

Caleb closed his eyes. “I never saw who pushed me.”

“Then what did you see?”

“A ring. Gold. With a black stone.”

May you like

Evelyn's stomach tightened. Walter Pryce, Arthur's attorney, wore exactly that ring.

Then Caleb added, “And Dad wasn't the one who told him where to find me.”
