Chapter 13 - The Woman Who Kept the Second Copy

Helen Mercer was eighty-two and lived in a small house outside Albany. She answered her own door, listened to our names, and asked us to leave our phones on the porch.

"I've waited a long time to hear someone say Evelyn Vale out loud," she said.

Her living room smelled of lemon polish and old books. Above the mantel hung a photograph of her husband, a public defender who'd died two winters earlier. She sat at a wooden desk and unfolded a letter dated a week before the Bellwether fire.

"Evelyn hired me to protect the pension trust. The hotel workers contributed every pay period. The Ardens transferred the money through construction accounts they controlled. She documented it."

"Why didn't this go to court?" Gideon asked.

Helen's eyes moved to the brooch I wore. "After the fire, Graham came here. He said Evelyn was dead and Ruth was confused. He offered me money to return my files. I refused. Two nights later, my office burned."

"You never reported that?"

"I did. The report called it an electrical fault."

She opened a locked cabinet. Inside were bank statements, original trust schedules, and a sworn affidavit Evelyn had signed before the fire. Helen had kept them in a relative's safety-deposit box until she retired.

Chen looked through the pages and exhaled. "These match the account numbers in the current merger documents. Some of the missing money is still being moved."

Conrad hadn't just covered up an old crime. He was using the same empty trust, the same false beneficiaries, to strip value from the present-day hotel.

Helen turned to me. "Your mother called me last Tuesday. She said somebody had found the bell room. I told her I would bring my files to the authorities, but she begged for three days to make sure you were safe."

"She thought silence would protect me," I said.

"Mothers often take too much responsibility for what dangerous men choose to do."

Gideon gently touched the paper bearing Evelyn's signature. "Can I have a copy?"

"You can have every copy," Helen said. "The originals go to Detective Chen."

At that moment Chen's phone rang. She stepped into the hall, listened, and returned with a grim expression.

"Owen Pike has been located," she said. "He's at the hospital where Ruth is recovering."
