Chapter 17 - The Daughter Who Knew

Celeste sat at the police station without her diamonds. She looked younger without them, but not kinder.

"I didn't light anything," she told Chen. "I drove the van because my father said it would be empty."

"You drove the vehicle used to deliver an accelerant to an occupied building," Chen said. "We can test what you knew."

Celeste stared at her hands. "I wanted to scare Mara. I didn't want anyone dead."

It was the first truthful sentence I'd ever heard her say, and it made me angrier than another lie would have. She knew enough to be frightened of her father, but she'd chosen to pass that fear along to us.

Chen asked whether Conrad had contacted her after the courthouse scene. Celeste nodded. With her lawyer present, she surrendered her messages. One instructed her to drive a particular van to Queens. Another said: IF THEY WON'T SIGN, THEY LOSE THE HOUSE.

Conrad had included a voice message. His own voice named the contractor hired for the job. There was no ambiguity, no softened business language.

Gideon listened once and handed the phone back.

"He was never going to stop," he said.

"Not while he thought you would keep protecting the family name," I replied.

Celeste flinched. "You think I'm like him."

"I think you had chances to be different."

Her eyes filled, but I didn't comfort her. I was finished doing emotional work for people who had never offered us any.

That evening Chen obtained warrants for Arden's current offices and the security company's records. Victor's drive matched the van payments to a shell account connected to the pension trust. The scheme linked old thefts to new crimes in black and white.

Then an investigator found a scanned clinic invoice buried among the account statements. It recorded an emergency medication order written two days after the fire, under the name of a nurse listed as NINA L.

Helen Mercer recognized the name immediately.

"Nina Laird," she said. "She called my office after Evelyn died. She said she'd seen something unforgivable."

"Where is she now?" Gideon asked.

Helen opened an address book. "If she's still alive, I think I can find her."
