Chapter 17 - The Price of Looking Away

Emil Hart was arrested the following morning. Investigators found payments from a Morrow House supplier in an account controlled by his consulting firm, along with messages arranging room access and the removal of surveillance equipment. Nina Bell and Ruth Finch gave detailed statements despite warnings from a hotel attorney.
"I thought I'd lose my job," Nina told Adrian. "I kept thinking about my rent. Then I saw Poppy on the floor. I couldn't pretend anymore."
"You did something when it mattered," he said.
"Not soon enough."
"I know that feeling."
The hotel suspended Emil and cooperated with investigators. Simone's lawyers called the case a family dispute. An edited video went online showing Adrian shouting and Simone crying. The shove, the locked room, and Poppy's screams were missing.
Adrian nearly posted a furious reply. Elise stopped him.
"Don't make our daughter defend her life to strangers," she said from her hospital bed. "Give the real recordings to the people who can use them."
He put down the phone.
An independent Morrow House audit found nonexistent meal programs, fake repair invoices, and children removed from waiting lists. Adrian visited a closed center with Marisol and saw faded handprints where the reading room had been.
He had once posed for a photograph holding an oversized donation check in that same room.
"I want to pay for the repairs," he told the center's director.
"We need accountability more than a ribbon-cutting," she answered.
"You'll have both. No cameras."
Later that evening, Elise opened a sealed evidence envelope containing a copy of the letter supposedly authorizing her disappearance. She studied it and pointed to a smudge beside the signature.
"They made me sign something," she said. "At the house. Kent said he'd show Poppy a video of me getting hurt if I refused. This page may be real."
May you like
Adrian leaned closer. "Then it was forced."
Elise nodded, but her expression darkened. "There's another page. And I signed that one, too."
