Chapter 19 - What Justice Could Give Back

Adrian read the request three times. Elise wasn't asking to cut him out. She wanted Poppy to have a stable home with her while she recovered, and she wanted Adrian to have regular time with their daughter under a clear schedule they could both follow.
"I thought we could decide this together," he said.
"We are deciding it together," Elise answered. "I'm telling you what I need, and I'm listening to what you need. That's the part we forgot before."
He stared at the courthouse doors. "I don't want Poppy thinking I'm leaving."
"Then show up when you say you will. That's how she'll know."
He signed the proposed agreement after reviewing it with his lawyer. No dramatic speech followed. He met Poppy on Saturday, packed her lunch the way she liked it, and arrived early on Wednesday when he was supposed to pick her up from art class. Every ordinary promise became a way to repair something he had once taken for granted.
Over the following months, Miles accepted responsibility for his part in the fraud. Kent and Emil supplied records and testimony under plea agreements approved by the court. Simone ultimately pleaded guilty to charges arising from Elise's abduction and the grant theft. She received a prison sentence, restitution obligations, and orders barring contact with the family. She offered no apology.
Adrian had imagined he would feel triumphant hearing the judgment. Instead he felt tired. A courtroom could hold someone accountable. It could not give Poppy back the nights she'd cried herself to sleep, or erase the sound of Elise calling through a locked door.
The recovered money couldn't replace every lost program, but an independent trustee began reopening them. Elise helped review records after the board adopted outside oversight.
One afternoon Poppy brought Adrian a drawing: three people on a dock, holding hands beneath a lighthouse.
"Is that us?" he asked.
"Yep. But you're not married to Mommy."
"I know."
"Can we still all be in the same picture?"
May you like
Adrian swallowed. "We can."
Poppy studied him a moment. "Then there's something I want for my birthday. And you both have to promise."
