Chapter 18 - The Words Under the Signature

The second page was a confession. It stated that Elise had stolen money from Morrow House, fabricated her audit findings, and voluntarily left her daughter because she feared prosecution. The handwriting beneath it was hers. So was the date.

"I signed it after they showed me Poppy's school schedule," Elise told Marisol. "They had pictures of her walking to class. Kent stood beside the table while Simone read the whole thing out loud."

"Did anyone witness you sign?"

"Kent. And Emil, over a video call."

Marisol wrote every word down. The confession might still complicate the case, she explained, but a signature obtained through threats was not the same as a truthful admission. Investigators had recovered messages proving Elise was being held against her will when she signed it.

At the preliminary hearing weeks later, Simone wore navy. Her attorney called Elise unreliable and the hotel incident a misunderstanding.

Then prosecutors played the full security recording.

Poppy appeared in her pink dress, knocking against the doors. Simone approached, grabbed her arm, and pushed. The child hit the wall and fell. Adrian rushed forward. The audio carried Poppy's sobbing as clearly as it had on the day itself.

No one in the gallery spoke.

Next came Kent's recording of Simone ordering Elise moved through the service lift. A second clip showed Emil announcing that the guest cameras had been disconnected. Records from the house established where Elise had been kept. Miles's financial documents tied the false invoices to Simone's accounts.

The judge found sufficient cause for the charges to proceed and maintained restrictions on contact with the witnesses and Poppy. It wasn't a verdict. It wasn't the end. But it was the first time Adrian had watched strangers refuse to accept Simone's polished explanation.

Outside, reporters called his name. He kept walking until a question stopped him.

"Did you ever suspect what was happening?"

Adrian turned. "My ex-wife warned me about the money. My daughter told me she'd heard her mother. I wish I'd listened before anyone had to scream."

Across the courthouse steps, Elise watched him with an unreadable expression. Then she handed him a folded sheet of paper.

It was a request to change their custody schedule. Poppy would be living with Elise again, and Adrian would have to earn his daughter's trust in a different way.
