Chapter 18 - Vanessa’s Last Lie

Daniel watched the video twice.

Vanessa’s voice was clear.

“Sarah comes back, you call me first. Daniel cannot see her until we know what she has.”

Grant leaned back. “You’re getting ambitious.”

“I’m protecting what I built.”

Daniel felt sick.

At the hospital, Vanessa did not deny it.

“I loved the life,” she said. “The house. Lily. You. I told myself I was protecting all of it.”

“You were protecting yourself.”

“Yes.”

Sarah stood beside Daniel, silent.

Vanessa looked at her. “When you came back to the mansion, I panicked. I called Grant. I locked you in the cellar because I thought he would move you somewhere else.”

“You knew what he did to me the first time,” Sarah said.

Vanessa’s chin trembled. “By then, yes.”

Daniel’s voice was flat. “And Lily?”

“I never planned to hurt her.”

“You covered her mouth while she begged for me.”

Vanessa began crying.

Daniel felt no comfort in it.

People often wanted forgiveness at the exact moment consequences arrived.

Ruiz later told them Vanessa would face kidnapping, conspiracy, unlawful imprisonment, evidence tampering, and financial crimes. Her cooperation might reduce her sentence, but it would not erase it.

Grant was charged with murder for Robert’s death, kidnapping, attempted murder, fraud, conspiracy, and dozens of related counts. Rourke faced almost as much.

For the first time in three years, Sarah slept without a locked door between her and the hallway.

Weeks passed.

Daniel moved Lily and Sarah to a rented house while the mansion remained a crime scene. He stepped away from Mercer Development and hired an outside forensic team to clean the company from top to bottom.

One evening, Lily sat between her parents on the porch.

“Are you married again now?” she asked.

Sarah and Daniel looked at each other.

“No, sweetheart,” Sarah said gently. “Life doesn’t fix itself that fast.”

Lily considered this.

“Can we still eat pancakes together?”

Daniel smiled for the first time in days. “Absolutely.”

His phone rang.

It was Evelyn.

“I found something in Robert’s sealed estate files,” she said. “A letter addressed to you.”

Daniel’s smile faded.

“What does it say?”

May you like

Evelyn hesitated.

“It says Grant wasn’t Robert’s only secret.”
