Chapter 5 - Vanessa’s Choice

For one impossible second, nobody moved.

Grant stared down the barrel. “You won’t shoot me.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears. “You said Sarah would be sent away. You said nobody would get hurt.”

Grant laughed. “And you believed me because believing me paid well.”

Daniel pushed himself up slowly.

“Vanessa,” he said, “give me the gun.”

She looked at Lily.

Lily hid behind Sarah.

That hurt Vanessa more than anything Grant had said.

“I never wanted her involved,” Vanessa whispered.

“You put your hand over her mouth,” Daniel said.

“I panicked.”

“You locked her mother in a hole.”

“I found Sarah in the storage room two nights ago. Grant told me she’d come back to destroy everything. He told me if I didn’t hide her, he’d send the police proof that I helped him years ago.”

Sarah’s voice sharpened. “You did help him.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Grant moved.

Vanessa fired.

The bullet struck the floor beside his shoe. Grant recoiled, then lunged toward the kitchen. Daniel went after him, but Grant slammed a heavy door between them and ran through the mudroom.

By the time Daniel reached the back porch, headlights were tearing down the driveway.

Grant escaped.

Vanessa lowered the pistol.

“Call the police,” she said. “I’ll tell them everything.”

Sarah shook her head. “He owns people.”

“What does that mean?” Daniel asked.

“Three years ago, the detective assigned to my disappearance met Grant twice before he interviewed you.”

Daniel remembered Detective Paul Rourke—calm, sympathetic, certain Sarah had driven into the river after an argument.

His stomach turned.

Vanessa handed him the gun.

“The real evidence isn’t here,” she said. “Grant keeps backups.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know. But Sarah does.”

Sarah looked at Vanessa in disbelief.

Vanessa continued, “You told me once, when you thought you were dying. You said you hid something before Grant took you.”

Sarah’s face changed.

Daniel saw memory return like a knife.

“The music box,” she whispered.

Lily looked up. “Mommy’s music box?”

Sarah nodded slowly.

Daniel knew exactly where it was.
