Chapter 14 - Pier 26

Rain started as they reached the river.

Gabriel wore no coat.

Beatrice walked beside him under Chloe's umbrella, calm as if they were heading to brunch.

"This is insane," Chloe whispered.

Beatrice signed back.

Yes.

At Pier 26, Vincent waited beneath an abandoned loading canopy with four armed men.

Marco knelt beside him, hands tied.

Blood ran from his lip.

Vincent smiled when he saw Beatrice.

"Aunt Bea."

Her expression turned to ice.

Gabriel held up the flash drive.

"Let him go."

"First, the drive."

Beatrice raised her hands.

Vincent frowned. "Do not start."

Chloe stepped forward to translate.

Beatrice signed slowly.

You murdered my husband because you were afraid of him.

Vincent laughed. "She always did love drama."

"She says you were afraid," Chloe repeated.

His eyes shifted to her.

"And she says Carlo knew you were stealing, but he was still going to give you one chance to confess."

Vincent's smile disappeared.

Beatrice continued.

You killed the only man who still wanted to forgive you.

For the first time, Vincent looked wounded.

Then angry.

"Give me the drive."

Gabriel tossed it onto the wet pavement between them.

Vincent nodded to one of his men.

The man bent to pick it up.

Marco suddenly threw his body sideways, knocking him down.

Gunfire erupted.

Chloe pulled Beatrice behind a concrete barrier.

Gabriel fired twice.

Mateo's men rushed from both ends of the pier.

Vincent grabbed Marco and pressed a gun to his neck.

"Stop!"

Everyone froze.

Vincent backed toward a waiting car.

"You think this ends with me?" he shouted. "Half your organization wanted Carlo gone!"

Gabriel's face hardened.

"Names."

Vincent smiled.

"Ask your mother. She saw them at the funeral."

Then he fired into the ground, shoved Marco aside, and jumped into the car.

The vehicle sped away.

Gabriel ran after it, but Mateo stopped him.

"Let him go. We planted a tracker in the drive."

Gabriel stared at him.

Mateo almost smiled.

"Your mother suggested it."

Beatrice lifted one eyebrow.

The tracker began moving north.

May you like

Then it stopped.

At Gabriel's own house.
