Chapter 15 - The House Within the House

They reached the mansion in twelve minutes.
The gates were open.
Two guards were unconscious but breathing.
Gabriel entered through the kitchen with Mateo while Chloe stayed beside Beatrice.
A crash sounded upstairs.
Then silence.
They found Vincent in Carlo's study.
He was not alone.
Three older men stood with him - men Chloe recognized from Table 7.
Gabriel's lieutenants.
Vincent smiled. "I told you. Half the room."
Gabriel looked at the men he had trusted for years.
"Why?"
One answered. "Your father was old. He wanted out of the port business. He was going to cooperate with investigators."
Gabriel's eyes sharpened. "And you thought I would protect you?"
"We thought you would understand survival."
Beatrice stepped into the doorway.
Everyone turned.
Her hands moved.
Chloe translated.
"She says you mistook greed for survival."
Vincent raised his gun at Chloe.
Gabriel moved instantly, putting himself between them.
"Do not."
Vincent laughed. "There he is. The great Gabriel Costello, finally listening to a waitress."
"No," Gabriel said. "I am finally listening to my mother."
Beatrice signed something else.
Chloe's eyes widened.
Gabriel glanced back. "What?"
"She says there is a recording system in the room. Your father installed it after he suspected Vincent."
Vincent's face changed.
Beatrice pointed toward the carved molding above the fireplace.
A tiny lens sat inside it.
Mateo looked at his phone.
"It has been uploading everything to a secure server."
The three lieutenants began shouting at once.
Vincent spun toward the wall and fired at the camera.
Gabriel tackled him.
The gun slid across the floor.
Chloe kicked it under the desk.
Vincent punched Gabriel hard enough to split his lip.
Gabriel hit him back.
Once.
Twice.
Then Beatrice stepped between them.
Her hands rose.
Enough.
Gabriel stopped.
Sirens grew louder outside.
Chloe stared at him. "You called the police?"
Gabriel wiped blood from his mouth.
"Federal investigators. Mateo sent them the files an hour ago."
Vincent went pale.
Then he started laughing.
"You idiot. Those files do not only bury me."
May you like
He looked at Gabriel.
"They bury you too."
