Chapter 13 - Richard’s Confession

Sheriff Molina wanted Richard in an ambulance.

Richard refused until he talked.

For once, nobody argued.

We stood beside the frozen pond while a deputy wrapped his shoulder.

“I stole from the vineyard,” Richard said. “That part is true.”

Eleanor looked away.

“I was twenty-six. Dad trusted me with payroll and expansion accounts. I moved money. Thomas found out.”

“So you killed him,” Ethan said.

“No.”

Richard’s voice cracked with anger. “I fought with him. I threatened him. I told him to stay away from Claire. But I did not push him off the ridge.”

“Then who did?”

“Caleb.”

The name landed heavily.

Richard explained that Caleb had been his closest friend. Loyal, reckless, desperate to impress him. When Thomas threatened to expose the stolen money, Richard told Caleb to scare him.

“I said rough him up,” Richard whispered. “I did not say kill him.”

Dad shook his head. “You sent a violent kid after him in the dark.”

“I know.”

“And Claire?” I asked.

Richard stared at the ice.

“She found out. She had copies of the accounts. She said she was going to the police. Caleb panicked.”

Eleanor’s voice was barely audible. “What did he do to my daughter?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

Dad stepped forward. “You’ve had thirty-seven years.”

“I know he took her car. I know he staged it near the river. I know he came back with blood on his sleeve and told me Claire was gone.”

Ethan’s face twisted. “And you stayed quiet?”

Richard looked at his son.

“If Claire’s evidence came out, I was going to prison for theft and conspiracy. I was a coward.”

“No,” Ethan said. “You were worse than a coward. You made everyone else live inside your lie.”

Richard closed his eyes.

Then Ghost began scratching the ice.

Not at the hole.

Three feet away.

Sheriff Molina ordered everyone back.

A deputy brought a long metal probe from the pump house.

He pushed it through the thin ice.

Something solid was underneath.

Not rock.

Metal.

They widened the opening.

A rusted car roof appeared below the black water.

Eleanor whispered, “Claire’s car was found at the river.”

Molina stared down.

“Then whose car is this?”
