Chapter 4 - The Sealed Room

The wedding was officially canceled at 2:17 p.m.

Nobody announced it. Nobody needed to.

Ethan, my father, Eleanor, and I followed the footprints downhill while Richard shouted into his phone behind us. Ghost pulled against his leash, whining toward the cellar.

The old stone building sat beneath a row of dormant vines. Its iron door had been painted black so many times the hinges looked swollen.

The brass key from the box fit the lock.

Ethan looked at me. “You sure?”

“No.”

I turned the key anyway.

Inside, the air smelled like dust, damp wood, and cold stone. Wine racks lined the walls. At the back stood a narrow door hidden behind stacked crates.

Eleanor stopped.

“That room.”

Dad went pale.

“You’ve been here?” I asked.

He nodded once.

Richard arrived behind us. “Nobody opens that door until the sheriff gets here.”

I faced him. “You had thirty-seven years to call the sheriff.”

His eyes hardened.

Dad stepped forward before the argument could explode. “Mara. Give me the key.”

“Why?”

“Because if Claire left what I think she left, you need to hear the truth in the right order.”

I almost screamed. “The right order? I was supposed to get married twenty minutes ago, and now I’m finding out you were connected to my fiancé’s missing aunt. I’m done with people deciding what order I can handle the truth in.”

Eleanor nodded. “Open it.”

I did.

The hidden room was small. No windows. One desk. One chair. A metal filing cabinet.

And on the desk sat a cassette recorder.

The exact model that matched the tape from the box.

My hands shook as I pushed the cassette in.

Static crackled.

Then a young woman’s voice filled the room.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened to me.”

Eleanor covered her mouth.

The voice continued.

“My name is Claire Cole. My brother Richard thinks I don’t know what he’s doing with the vineyard accounts.”

Richard lunged for the recorder.

Ethan blocked him.

The tape hissed.

Claire spoke again.

“But the money isn’t the worst part.”

A long pause.

“The worst part is what Richard did to Thomas Bell.”

My father whispered, “Oh, God.”

May you like

Then the tape cut off.

Because someone had unplugged the recorder from behind us.
