Chapter 3 - My Father’s Name

My father was standing in the third row.

Daniel Hayes had spent most of his life repairing farm equipment outside Albany. He wore the same dark suit he had worn to my college graduation and looked deeply uncomfortable among people who owned vineyards, private planes, and winter homes in Aspen.

When Eleanor said his name, every camera turned toward him.

Dad didn’t move.

I climbed off the platform. “Tell me she’s wrong.”

He looked at the photograph in Richard’s hand.

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“Dad.”

He closed his eyes.

Ethan stepped between us. “You knew her?”

Dad opened his eyes again. “Yes.”

The word hit harder than shouting would have.

Richard gave a humorless laugh. “There. Mystery solved. Daniel Hayes was the last man seen with my sister before she vanished. Ask him why he left town the next morning.”

“Richard,” Eleanor warned.

“No, let’s do this.” Richard pointed at my father. “Thirty-seven years ago, Claire disappeared. Her car was found near the river. Daniel vanished before police could question him properly.”

Dad’s jaw tightened. “That is not what happened.”

“Then tell them what did.”

My father looked at me.

I had never seen fear in his face. Not when Mom died. Not when our house burned. Not when doctors told him his heart needed surgery.

But I saw it now.

“I promised Claire I would never tell,” he said.

I almost laughed from disbelief. “She’s been missing for thirty-seven years.”

“I know.”

“So whatever promise you made is over.”

His voice dropped. “Some promises outlive people.”

Before I could answer, a security guard hurried from the estate house.

“Mr. Cole,” he said to Richard. “You need to come inside.”

Richard snapped, “What now?”

“The camera feed from the old cellar just went offline.”

Eleanor’s face drained again.

“What camera?” I asked.

No one answered.

The guard continued, “And the cellar door is open.”

Ethan stared downhill.

The black iron door at the base of the vineyard stood slightly ajar.

A line of footprints led through the fresh snow toward it.

Only one set.

And they were fresh.
