Chapter 13 - The Principal Turns

Principal Reeves had spent most of the week trying to survive.
That changed when Rachel showed him the email.
REPLACE SOON.
He read it once, then sat back in his chair.
"When was this sent?"
"Six months ago."
Reeves looked toward the closed office door.
"That's two weeks after I refused to remove Malik from honors history."
Nia stared at him. "They tried to remove him before?"
Reeves looked ashamed.
"Mrs. Baxter recommended it. She said he was argumentative and disruptive. His grades didn't support the recommendation, so I denied it."
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"Because I thought I handled it."
Nia's voice sharpened. "Adults keep saying that while children keep paying for it."
Reeves nodded slowly. "You're right."
Then he unlocked a drawer.
Inside was a personal notebook.
For eighteen months, he had documented every unusual directive from Thomas Baxter: pressure about discipline, requests to change teacher evaluations, instructions to keep certain complaints off board agendas.
"Why keep this?" Rachel asked.
"Because I started realizing nobody else was writing things down."
He turned to a page dated October 3.
Thomas says diversity complaints hurt enrollment. Wants informal resolution only.
Another page.
Eleanor upset about Carter boy. Says he is challenging her authority. Thomas asks whether family can be encouraged to transfer.
Malik read the sentence twice.
"They wanted me gone before she hit me."
No one answered.
That was answer enough.
Reeves agreed to cooperate with investigators and turn over his notebook.
Two hours later, the district placed him on administrative leave.
The official reason: failure to follow chain-of-command procedures.
Nia read the email and slammed her phone onto the table.
"They punished him for telling the truth."
Rachel shook her head. "They made a mistake."
"How is that a mistake?"
"Because retaliation is evidence too."
That evening, students organized a silent walkout for Monday.
Malik did not plan it.
He found out when Caleb texted him a screenshot.
WEAR BLACK. WALK OUT AT 10:13. ONE MINUTE FOR EVERY COMPLAINT THEY IGNORED.
Seventeen complaints.
Seventeen minutes.
Malik stared at the message.
Then another text appeared.
From an unknown number.
IF YOU WALK OUT, SOMEBODY GETS HURT.
