Chapter 15 - The Empty House

The Baxters were gone.
Their cars remained in the garage, but passports were missing from the upstairs safe. Two laptops had been removed. A backyard security camera had been smashed.
Police stopped short of calling them fugitives because no arrest warrants had been issued.
Rachel used a less polite word.
"Running."
By sunrise, federal investigators had joined the financial side of the case. The foundation's tax filings raised questions unrelated to Malik but connected to the same pattern of control: consulting payments, unexplained transfers, scholarships approved without applications.
Nia watched the news and shook her head.
"All this because a teacher couldn't handle being corrected by a thirteen-year-old."
Rachel looked at her. "No. All this was already here. Malik exposed it."
That distinction mattered.
At school, Malik returned for the first time since the incident.
The hallway went quiet when he walked in.
He hated it.
Then Emma raised her fist from beside her locker.
Caleb did the same.
A few students clapped.
Malik groaned. "Please don't."
They stopped immediately.
"Normal," he said. "Can everybody just be normal?"
Caleb smiled. "You owe me ten bucks from fantasy football."
Malik laughed for the first time in days.
It felt good.
Until third period.
A school resource officer appeared at the classroom door.
"Malik Carter? Your parents are downstairs."
His stomach dropped.
In the office, Nia stood beside Rachel. Andre was on speakerphone from work.
"What's wrong?" Malik asked.
Rachel held up a printed email.
It had been sent from Mrs. Baxter's personal account forty minutes earlier.
Subject: MY STATEMENT.
I will not allow a dishonest student and an ambitious lawyer to destroy my life. The truth will be heard today.
Attached was a video.
Mrs. Baxter sat in an unknown room, looking exhausted.
"Malik Carter threatened me," she said into the camera. "I used reasonable discipline because I feared for my safety. The audio circulating online was manipulated."
Then she held up a document.
"I have proof."
Rachel paused the video.
Malik stared at the paper in Mrs. Baxter's hand.
It appeared to be a disciplinary report with his name on it.
And at the bottom was Principal Reeves's signature.

Reeves looked at the screenshot and said one sentence.
"I never signed that.
