Chapter 13 - The Room Under the West Wing

Police put Richard's wife under protection.
Then we drove to the Ashford estate with a warrant, two detectives, a forensic team, and enough officers to make the neighbors stop pretending not to watch.
Thomas was not home.
His attorney claimed he was at a business meeting.
Richard led us through the west wing library and moved a bronze sculpture from a shelf. Behind it was a biometric panel.
"Dad had this installed after a records theft in the nineties," he said.
He pressed his thumb to the glass.
A section of bookcase unlocked.
Cold air rose from a narrow stairway.
Emily looked at me. "You lived here and never knew?"
"Apparently I knew less about my life than I thought."
The room below was larger than my first apartment.
Metal cabinets lined the walls. Climate-controlled shelves held contracts, old ledgers, hard drives, photographs, and sealed boxes.
The forensic team began cataloging everything.
Then Emily found a gray archive box labeled 2008 - CATHERINE.
Inside was her original hospital bracelet.
I knew it before anyone read the name.
ELISE M. ASHFORD.
My knees buckled.
Emily caught my arm.
Under the bracelet lay the missing locket.
The burglar had delivered it straight back to Thomas.
Brooks photographed it in place.
"That's obstruction," she said quietly. "Now we're getting somewhere."
At the bottom of the box was the microcassette.
Forensics brought in an old recorder from another evidence kit and made a digital copy before playing it.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman's voice.
"My name is Evelyn Crane. On October 17, 2008, Thomas Ashford paid me to remove Elise Ashford from St. Catherine's Hospital during the fire evacuation. The fire was not part of our plan. He told me the child needed to disappear before Margaret's father could finalize control of the family trust."
I gripped the table.
The tape continued.
"I took the baby to St. Anne's. Thomas came with me. He later ordered me to sign papers saying the mother identified a body. She never did. There was no body."
Emily began to cry silently.
Then Evelyn said one more thing.
"If Thomas ever claims this was only about money, he is lying. Someone else asked him to do it first."
Static.
A pause.
Then a name.
May you like
"Richard Vale."
Every person in the room turned toward my brother.
