Chapter 16 - The Man Called R

Raymond Pike spoke from a secure video room in Arizona.

He was seventy-four, thin, bald, and visibly terrified.

"I want the agreement in writing," he said.

Detective Brooks slid the prosecutor's limited-immunity letter into view.

"You are protected for failure to report certain financial offenses. You are not protected for kidnapping, conspiracy, violence, or perjury."

Raymond read it twice.

Then he looked into the camera.

"Thomas called me R because he thought using initials made him clever."

I almost laughed.

Almost.

"Did you order him to take Elise?" Brooks asked.

"No. I told him the child changed his position. That's true. I told him William Vale planned to remove him. Also true. Thomas asked me how to stop the trust from vesting. I said legally? Divorce, challenge the trust, negotiate."

Raymond swallowed.

"He asked what happened if the child died."

My stomach clenched.

"What did you say?"

"I told him not to say something like that again."

Raymond opened a folder.

"Three days before the hospital fire, Thomas asked me to prepare a memo on presumed death and succession. I refused. After the fire, he came to my office with a signed death authorization and told me Elise had died. I believed him for about a week."

"What changed?"

"I saw Evelyn Crane leave his office with an envelope of cash."

Raymond confronted Thomas.

Thomas told him the baby was alive and "somewhere safe." He said Margaret was emotionally fragile and would eventually have another child. Raymond admitted he stayed silent because Thomas threatened to expose financial misconduct Raymond had committed for the company.

"I was a coward," he said. "But I didn't order it."

Then he provided one final piece of evidence: an old dictation recording Thomas had accidentally left on Raymond's office answering system.

The prosecutor played the digitized file.

Thomas's voice was unmistakable.

"The fire solves the timing problem. Crane has the child. St. Anne's won't ask questions. Margaret will sign whatever we put in front of her once she's sedated."

Another male voice said, "And if she wakes up first?"

Thomas replied, "Then I'll sign for her."

The room went silent.

Brooks stood.

"That's probable cause."

Police moved to arrest Thomas.

But he was no longer at the estate.

His passport was missing.

So was forty thousand dollars in cash from the house safe.

And Emily was nowhere in the kitchen.

Her phone lay on the counter.

The back door was open.
