Chapter 15 - The Old Crime

The pension fund was not empty.
That would have been simpler.
It had been quietly borrowed against.
Years earlier, Thomas and Voss had used employee retirement assets as collateral during an aggressive expansion. The loans had been repaid, but the disclosure had been hidden from the board and federal regulators.
Victor discovered the secret during due diligence.
That was how he first gained leverage.
Caleb listened to the explanation in the Hart home kitchen at four-thirty in the morning.
He felt too tired to be angry, yet anger kept coming.
“You didn’t make one mistake,” he told his father. “You built a staircase out of mistakes and kept climbing.”
Thomas sat at the table.
“Yes.”
Margaret stood at the window.
“Did Eleanor know?”
Thomas shook his head. “Not all of it.”
“You lied to your mother too.”
“Yes.”
For once he did not defend himself.
Detective Morales explained that Thomas could face federal investigation even if he cooperated now.
He nodded.
“I’ll cooperate.”
Caleb studied him.
“Because you’re sorry?”
“Because I’m done choosing the next lie.”
It was the first thing Thomas had said that Caleb almost believed.
Across the room, Sloane sat beside her attorney.
She looked exhausted, her ivory-gold wedding gown replaced by a borrowed sweater and black pants.
Caleb remembered her at the altar only hours earlier.
He remembered believing his life was about to begin.
Now he felt older by years.
Sloane said quietly, “I have access to my father’s private cloud account.”
Her attorney groaned. “Please stop volunteering information.”
“No.”
She looked at Caleb.
“There are voice notes. Contracts. Messages with Martin. Maybe enough to prove my father planned all of this.”
“Why didn’t you give them to anyone before?”
“Because I wanted my father’s approval more than I wanted to admit what he was.”
Caleb understood that kind of weakness too well now.
Sloane opened her laptop.
She logged in.
A folder appeared labeled HART.
Inside were dozens of files.
One was dated six months earlier.
WEDDING CONTINGENCY.
Sloane clicked it.
A video opened.
Victor Whitmore sat in his study, speaking to Martin Voss.
“If Caleb backs out,” Victor said, “we use the accident.”
Sloane stopped the video.
May you like
Caleb stared at her.
“What accident?”
