Chapter 17 - The Person at the Gate

Margaret did not answer at first.

Caleb showed her the message in the study after the federal agents left.

She read it twice.

Then she sat down.

“Mom?”

“There was a nurse.”

“What nurse?”

“Her name was Natalie Greene.”

Margaret explained that Natalie worked nights at Cedar Ridge. For months she quietly helped Margaret send letters, including the ones Rosa tried to deliver. She also copied medication logs showing that Margaret had repeatedly refused sedatives that were later recorded as administered.

“She believed me,” Margaret said.

“Then why didn’t she call police?”

“She did.”

Caleb frowned.

“What happened?”

“The report disappeared. Cedar Ridge’s attorney said I was a voluntary patient and Natalie was violating privacy rules.”

“Victor’s attorney?”

Margaret nodded.

“Natalie was fired three weeks ago.”

“Then how did she open the gate last night?”

“She came back.”

Margaret’s eyes filled.

“She waited outside during a shift change. She cut the power to the side gate and gave me a coat. I ran through the woods to the highway.”

“Why didn’t you tell police?”

“I was afraid Victor would go after her.”

Caleb looked at the anonymous message.

“Maybe he already is.”

Detective Morales traced the text to a prepaid phone. No account name.

But Rosa remembered Natalie had a sister who owned a bakery in White Plains.

They went there immediately.

The bakery was closed.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, trays sat untouched behind the glass.

A coffee cup lay broken near the counter.

Caleb’s pulse hammered.

“Police should clear it first.”

Morales entered with her weapon drawn.

They found Natalie in the back office.

Alive.

Shaken.

Her wrists were tied with plastic restraints.

Ross, now cooperating fully with police, cut them loose.

Natalie looked at Margaret and burst into tears.

“I’m sorry.”

Margaret knelt beside her.

“For what?”

“They took my files.”

“What files?”

Natalie looked at Caleb.

“The medication records. The visitor logs. Everything.”

Caleb asked, “Who took them?”

Natalie swallowed.

“Not Victor.”

She turned toward Thomas, who had come with his attorney to identify Cedar Ridge communications.

“It was someone from Hart Family Holdings.”

Thomas went still.

“Who?”

May you like

Natalie whispered the name.

“Emma.”
