Chapter 16 - The Accident That Hadn’t Happened Yet

Nobody wanted to press play again.

Caleb did it anyway.

Victor’s recorded voice filled the kitchen.

“If Caleb backs out, we use the accident. The insurance converts the bridge notes, Thomas loses control, and Sloane inherits enough of the position to stabilize the company.”

Martin Voss leaned back in his chair on the screen.

“You’re talking about killing him?”

Victor’s expression did not change.

“I’m talking about risk management.”

Sloane made a broken sound.

Caleb paused the video.

She stood so quickly the chair fell backward.

“He never told me.”

Her face was gray.

“He never told me that.”

Caleb believed her.

Not because he trusted her again.

Because no one could fake that kind of horror.

Margaret crossed the room and, after a moment, put one hand on Sloane’s shoulder.

Sloane looked at her in shock.

Margaret said, “You can be guilty of one thing without being guilty of everything.”

Sloane began to sob.

The files gave police enough to expand the investigation immediately.

Victor’s phones, accounts, and properties were frozen before sunrise.

Martin Voss asked for a lawyer and then, within an hour, asked for a deal.

He told detectives there had been no active murder plan yet, but Victor had paid a private investigator to study Caleb’s driving patterns and frequent routes.

The threat was real.

By seven in the morning, the wedding story had leaked.

Reporters surrounded the Hart house.

Headlines exploded online.

BILLIONAIRE WEDDING COLLAPSES AFTER MOTHER REMOVED BY SECURITY.

BRIDE’S FATHER DETAINED IN TRUST FRAUD PROBE.

Caleb stood in the upstairs hallway looking at the crowd through a curtain.

Emma joined him.

“Are you okay?”

“No.”

“Good answer.”

He almost smiled.

Downstairs, Margaret was speaking with federal agents.

Thomas was preparing to surrender on financial charges.

Sloane was giving a formal statement.

The life Caleb had known was gone.

His phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

He expected another threat.

Instead it read:

YOUR MOTHER DIDN’T ESCAPE CEDAR RIDGE BY HERSELF.

Caleb typed back.

WHO IS THIS?

The reply came immediately.
