Chapter 12 - The Nurse in Red Shoes

Leah Serrano noticed the tapping, too. It was not a coded message she recognized, and she refused to invent one. But Nora's face, the bare room, and the signs of possible coercion gave the missing-person case new urgency.

The warrant came through before sunrise. Officers entered the medical building with paramedics waiting outside.

Julian stayed at the command post across the street. Rain rattled the windshield. He counted every minute until Serrano called.

"The fourth floor is empty," she said. "They cleaned it recently. We found medical waste, a torn patient label with Nora's name, and a key pad removed from the wall."

"So she was there."

"We believe so. The team is collecting evidence."

As officers searched, a nurse in red athletic shoes came out through the back stairwell carrying a grocery bag. Her name was Lena Cho. She stopped when she saw the police, put down the bag, and raised her hands.

"I didn't know they were keeping her," she said. "Not until last night."

Lena described a woman admitted as a voluntary patient who had repeatedly said she wanted to leave. When Lena challenged the chart, a supervisor told her the patient was confused and under private guardianship. No court order had been shown.

"I kept asking why they didn't send her to a regular hospital," Lena said. "They threatened my license."

"Where did they take her?" Serrano asked.

"I heard someone say the old pumping station. I don't know which one."

Lena handed over the bag. It contained a copy of an intake sheet, a roster, and a torn page covered with Nora's handwriting.

Julian recognized her slanting letters at once. Nora had written three words along the edge of the page: BELIEVE THE CHILD.

Lena showed Serrano another detail: a list of vehicles assigned to the clinic. One gray sedan bore a partial plate matching the car spotted outside Sadie's house.

The detective looked at the photograph from the hotel loading dock. Grant Baird's face was clear. The chain of evidence was growing stronger.

Before they could leave, Owen called Julian with news from the Keene board. Martin had convened an emergency meeting, and Camille was asking directors to remove Julian as president on grounds of instability.

The vote was scheduled for noon. The old pumping station was due for demolition at eleven.
