Chapter 15 - What Nora Remembered

At the hospital, Nora insisted on speaking to Serrano before she agreed to rest. The detective recorded the conversation and made clear that Nora could stop whenever she needed.
Nine years earlier, Nora explained, she had uncovered false flood-relief invoices. Martin Keene controlled the accounts. Camille handled the grant applications. Grant Baird arranged shell companies that billed the fund for work never done.
When Nora questioned Julian, she had not known that his access to the books was restricted. Martin gave him polished summaries while the real records stayed elsewhere.
"I wanted to show you proof," Nora told Julian. "Then I got those letters. One said you'd take the baby as soon as she was born."
"I never saw them."
"I know that now. I didn't know it then."
On the night of the storm, Baird had confronted her by the bridge. Nora fled in her car. Another vehicle struck the rear quarter panel. She spun into a guardrail and went down the embankment. The car rolled into shallow water near a culvert; Nora climbed out and reached a road before emergency crews arrived at the bridge.
"A truck driver got me to a clinic," she said. "I didn't tell them my real name. I was hurt, and I thought somebody would finish the job if they found me."
Faye, a retired teacher Nora had known since childhood, helped her relocate. The fake letters kept Nora from contacting Julian. She built a new life, raised Sadie, and gathered records quietly whenever she could.
"I came back because children were getting sick near the new development," Nora said. "The same money was disappearing, and the water tests were changing again."
"You should have called me," Julian said, then immediately wished he had not.
Nora studied him. "Maybe. But I need you to understand: fear wasn't a choice I made once. They taught me to expect danger every time I opened a door."
Julian nodded. "You're right. I'm sorry."
Serrano placed the hospital chart beside the evidence from the pumping station. "Nora, the people who held you tried to force a statement clearing the fund. Do you recognize the person who gave those instructions?"
"Camille came to the room," Nora said. "She wore a green coat. She told me that if I signed, Sadie could keep her mother."

Julian's phone buzzed with the results of the board vote. He had been removed as president.
A second alert followed: Owen Pike, his operations chief, had withdrawn forty thousand dollars in cash from a company emergency account and vanished.
