Chapter 17 - The Camera That Survived

Owen was found alive in an empty repair garage that evening. He had been locked in a supply room after refusing to hand over the cash. He told Serrano a man claiming to possess old camera footage had lured him there, then demanded access to the foundation's servers.

"I thought I could fix one piece of this myself," Owen admitted to Julian. "I didn't want to tell you until I had something real."

"You nearly disappeared," Julian said. "The police were already working on it."

"I know. I was an idiot."

But Owen had kept a photograph of the seller's receipt before the man took the envelope. Serrano matched its business name to one of Baird's shell companies. Investigators obtained a warrant for the associated storage account and recovered several aging camera backups.

One showed the bridge approach on the night Nora disappeared. Through heavy rain, a car followed Nora's, then struck it. Moments later a second vehicle arrived. Martin stepped out beneath an umbrella. Beside him stood Camille, holding a phone to her ear.

The image did not reveal what either person said, but it placed both of them at the scene. Combined with the falsified letter, financial trail, clinic records, and witness statements, it changed the investigation.

The digital forensics team also finished copying Nora's encrypted drive. With Nora's consent, they used the phrase Sadie remembered. It opened a folder of invoices, recorded conversations, and emails Nora had collected over years. Independent records supported the dates and amounts.

One audio file contained Martin's voice: "I don't care what it costs. She cannot take the originals to the state."

Another contained Camille instructing a contractor to replace a water report before a board presentation.

Julian listened once, then put down the headphones. He had spent years defending the fund in public. Now he could see how easily his name had been used to reassure people who deserved real answers.

Serrano closed the laptop. "We're taking this to the prosecutor."

"Will you arrest them?"

"When the evidence meets the threshold and we can do it safely. Not because the footage makes a good ending."

At that moment the desk phone rang. A patrol unit had located Baird at a private airfield with a packed suitcase.

He was asking for a lawyer, and he was willing to talk about Martin.
