Chapter 8 - The Man Who Raised Him

Martin Keene answered the door to his downtown office with a neat tie and a look of practiced disappointment.

"Your father would be ashamed," he said before Julian stepped inside.

"My father taught me to ask where the money went."

"Your father trusted me."

"Then show me the books."

Martin folded his hands on his desk. Behind him, the city glowed in the early morning rain. Julian remembered being sixteen, sitting in this same room while Martin explained how a balance sheet worked. The memory made the betrayal feel personal enough to bruise.

"Camille says a child is pretending to be yours," Martin said.

"A child named Sadie has a missing mother. You're talking about her like a billing error."

Martin sighed. "If you give your whole life to chasing Nora Mercer, you'll destroy everything your father built."

"Tell me about the water reports."

The older man reached for his phone. Julian caught a glimpse of an email subject on the screen: MORROW 418 - MOVE INVENTORY TODAY.

"Who is moving the inventory?" Julian asked.

Martin locked the screen. "I'm asking you to leave."

Julian walked toward the door, then stopped. "One last question. Nine years ago, did you send Nora a letter with my signature?"

Martin's eyes moved toward the window. "I protected this family."

"That isn't an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

Outside, Julian called Serrano and repeated the email subject exactly. She said she was already seeking a warrant for the storage facility.

"Please tell me you didn't touch his computer," she added.

"No. But he'll move the files."

"Then we'd better be faster."

Julian had barely hung up when a message arrived from an unfamiliar email address. Attached was a scanned letter dated nine years earlier, bearing his signature. It ordered Nora to stay away and threatened legal action if she contacted him about a child.

The signature looked frighteningly authentic. The paper carried the old Keene letterhead that had been discontinued after his father's death.
