Chapter 11 - The Truth About Vivian

Adrian stared at his wife.

"Gavin is your brother?"

Vivian did not answer.

Thomas did.

"Half brother. Their father was one of Richard Harrington's drivers."

Adrian looked sick.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Vivian laughed. "Would you have married the driver's daughter?"

"I married you because I loved you."

"You married the version of me your family could display at fundraisers."

For one second, Emma saw something real in Vivian's face.

Old anger.

Then it disappeared.

Thomas held a pistol at his side.

"Put the ledger on the desk."

Marcus slowly raised his hands. "Federal agents already have copies."

Thomas smiled. "Then you won't mind giving me the original."

"Why?"

"Because originals create doubt. Copies create arguments."

Emma understood.

He wanted to attack chain of custody. Claim fabrication. Drag everything through court for years.

Adrian stepped in front of Emma.

"You killed my father."

Thomas looked almost bored. "Your father was dying anyway."

"He was sixty-four."

"And stubborn."

Vivian whispered, "Thomas. Don't."

Everyone looked at her.

Thomas raised an eyebrow.

Vivian's voice tightened. "You said we weren't talking about Richard."

Adrian turned toward her.

"You knew?"

"Not until later."

"How much later?"

Vivian's eyes filled, but no tears fell.

"After we were married."

Thomas sighed. "This is becoming sentimental."

Emma slowly placed the blue ledger on the desk.

"You want it? Take it."

Thomas moved forward.

Emma kicked the desk hard.

The ledger slid off the other side.

Adrian slammed into Gavin.

Lauren grabbed a metal lamp and hit Thomas's wrist.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Marcus dove behind a cabinet.

Emma went for the ledger.

Vivian got there first.

Their hands closed over it at the same time.

"Let go," Emma said.

Vivian looked into her eyes.

"Your mother was trying to save me too."

Emma froze.

That hesitation was enough.

Vivian ripped the ledger free and ran into the tunnel.

Behind them, Thomas shouted, "Stop her!"

Not stop Emma.

May you like

Stop Vivian.

In the struggle, one of the photographs fell face down. Emma caught a glimpse of handwriting on the back: BELL CONTROLS THE BOARD. It was dated twelve years earlier.
