Chapter 19 - What Nora Left Behind

Vivian looked smaller in the hospital bed.
No satin dress. No diamonds. No champagne.
Just a pale woman with her arm in a sling and dark circles under her eyes.
Emma stood at the foot of the bed.
"You pushed me into a pool."
Vivian almost smiled. "I know."
"You pointed a gun at me."
"I know."
"You helped steal from my mother's trust."
Vivian looked away. "I know."
Emma let the silence sit between them.
"So don't ask me to forgive you."
"I'm not."
Vivian looked back at her.
"I'm asking you to finish what Nora started."
She explained that after Nora's death, Gavin had given Thomas a copy of the police crash report. The original had contained photographs of tire marks from a second vehicle.
Those pages disappeared before the report reached prosecutors.
"Nora expected that," Vivian said. "She had already gotten copies from a highway engineer."
"Where?"
"Inside the old staff locker at the villa pool house. Locker twelve."
Emma stared at her.
The pool.
Of course.
The place where Vivian had humiliated her was the place Nora had hidden the last evidence.
"Why didn't you take it?"
"Because I didn't know until Nora told Lauren. Lauren told me last night before Gavin grabbed her."
Emma went back to the villa with federal agents.
Locker twelve was rusted shut.
They cut it open.
Inside was a plastic envelope.
Crash photos.
Engineering notes.
A partial license plate captured by a roadside camera.
Gavin's old SUV.
It was enough.
But there was also one more thing.
A letter.
Emma opened it beside the same blue pool where this had all started.
My sweet girl,
If you find this, then you did the thing I was most afraid you'd do.
You came looking for the truth.
I'm sorry I left you that burden.
Emma's eyes filled.
The letter continued.
Do not let these people turn you into them. Money makes people believe they can buy silence, loyalty, even love. They can't. If you inherit anything from me, let it be this: when somebody tries to make you feel small, stand up anyway.
Emma lowered the page.
Across the pool, Adrian waited quietly.
"What did she say?" he asked.
Emma folded the letter.
"She told me to stand up."
A federal agent approached.
"Ms. Reed. Thomas Bell just requested a deal."
Emma looked at him.
"For what?"
"He says he'll name every person in the red book."
"And what does he want?"
The agent hesitated.
May you like
"He wants you to testify that Vivian Cross was the mastermind."
Emma placed the plastic envelope into an evidence bag herself. The last physical pieces of her mother's fear were no longer hidden in a locker. They were finally in the light.
