Chapter 18 - The Name on the Trust

By sunrise, Gavin was in federal custody.

Vivian was back in the hospital.

Thomas Bell was under guard.

And Emma was sitting in a conference room with the real red book open in front of her.

Adrian stood at the window.

"Gavin said to ask who owns the trust."

Adrian did not turn around.

"My family owns it."

Marcus slid a document across the table.

"Not exactly."

He had pulled the original trust charter overnight.

Richard Harrington had created Harrington Private Trust decades ago, but ownership had been split among three beneficiaries.

Richard held forty percent.

Adrian held thirty.

The final thirty percent was assigned to a silent beneficiary identified only by initials.

N.R.

Emma stared at the page.

"Nora Reed?"

Marcus nodded.

"Your mother."

Emma laughed in disbelief. "My mother rented a two-bedroom apartment and drove a twelve-year-old Honda."

"She never took distributions," Marcus said. "She left the money inside the trust."

"Why would Richard give her thirty percent?"

Adrian finally turned around.

"Because she was my half sister."

The room went silent.

Emma could not process the words.

Adrian sat down slowly.

"My father told me once, when he was sick. He had a daughter before he married my mother. He said the mother wanted privacy. He said the daughter wanted nothing from him."

Emma felt numb.

"Nora knew?"

"I think she did."

Marcus pointed to another clause.

"Upon Nora's death, her interest transfers to her direct heir."

Emma looked at him.

"Me."

"You now own thirty percent of Harrington Private Trust."

That meant the missing $28 million was not only money Nora was auditing.

It was partly hers.

Partly Emma's.

Emma leaned back, trying to breathe.

Adrian looked at her with a strange mixture of grief and wonder.

"You're my niece."

Emma's first instinct was to laugh.

Her second was to cry.

She did neither.

Her phone rang.

Hospital.

Emma answered.

A doctor said, "Ms. Reed, Vivian Cross has asked to see you immediately. She says she remembers where Nora's original crash report is hidden."

Emma stood.

May you like

The doctor added, "And she says you need to come before Thomas Bell's people find it."

Thirty percent of a fortune did not feel like winning. It felt like discovering that her mother had carried an entire second life alone. Emma wondered how many times Nora had almost told her and chosen silence instead.
