Chapter 15 - The Road Into Pennsylvania

The photograph showed Marcus alive, or someone who looked painfully like him. Elena traced the curve of his eyebrow without touching the paper. Daniel recognized the broken knuckle on Marcus's right hand.
“It's him,” Daniel said.
Elena gripped the table. “Don't say that unless you're sure.”
“I'm sure it's his hand. I'm not sure when the photo was taken.”
Agents examined the image and found that the paper came from a small pharmacy printer in western Pennsylvania. Surveillance records led to a bus station, then to a temporary shelter serving people with medical conditions and no permanent home.
Daniel stayed out of the active search. He knew what the family wanted most, and he knew barging into a shelter could frighten a vulnerable man who might be Marcus.
While investigators worked, Ruth Calder appeared in court through her attorney and offered to cooperate. Her lawyer claimed Victor had threatened her family. Prosecutors warned that cooperation didn't erase the crimes she might have committed.
Ruth's first disclosure was a code used for company payments to Bellhaven: HOMECOMING.
Andrew almost laughed at the cruelty of the word.
Victor's public image finally began to fracture when the board suspended him from all company duties pending review. Donors demanded refunds. Veterans' groups requested that their names be removed from promotional materials. Victor called it betrayal.
Elena called it the first truthful thing anyone had done with his money.
That night a field agent phoned. They'd found a man matching Marcus's description at the shelter. He'd left earlier in the afternoon after a volunteer showed him a news report about the gala.
“Did he say where he was going?” Elena asked.
“He said he had to see a girl named Sophie.”
Elena looked at the sleeping child in the next room. “He wouldn't know where we live now.”
The agent hesitated. “He carried an old school photograph. It had an address written on the back.”
Before Elena could answer, the safe house's doorbell rang.

A man's voice came through the intercom, weak and frightened.
“I'm looking for my daughter.”
