Chapter 18 - The Price of the Truth

The missing evidence was the original shipment ledger. Copies showed payments and altered inspections, but the handwritten ledger could identify the end buyers and men who'd profited from the diverted components. Investigators worried that without it, some participants might walk away untouched.
Marcus had no clear memory of where he'd placed it. He remembered a station, the smell of iron rails, and writing a number before a mission. Daniel thought of the train museum and the rented drawer.
With a warrant, investigators opened drawer seventeen at the old depot. It was empty except for a child's folded paper crane and a note on yellowing stationery.
Elena recognized Marcus's handwriting: The ledger isn't where they'll think. Ask Sophie about the bells.
Sophie stared at the note in their living room. “Dad used to sing a silly song about three bells. One for the station. One for the wedding. One for home.”
Elena remembered the little brass bell hanging by the back door of their first apartment. Marcus had carried it from home to home, saying the sound reminded him to return.
The bell was still in a box in Elena's garage. An agent brought it to the evidence lab, where a technician found a hidden screw beneath its handle. Inside the hollow body lay a tightly rolled strip of paper listing a bank locker and an access code.
They opened the bank locker under court supervision. It held the original ledger, a backup drive, and a letter addressed to Elena and Sophie.
Marcus had written it before the attack, believing he might never see them again. He apologized for not telling Elena more, described how much he loved her, and asked that Sophie never confuse his absence with lack of love.
Elena read the letter beside Marcus, who couldn't remember writing it. They cried for the family they'd lost and the uncertain family they might become.
The ledger exposed a buyer the investigation hadn't yet linked to the operation. A former federal official had quietly approved the movement of illegal components in exchange for private payments.

And someone had warned him the ledger had been found.
